The Republic of Croatia is territorially and administratively divided into 21 counties. Among those is Međimurje County. With a territory of 730 km² and population of 118 426, it is situated in the very northwestern corner of Croatia, between rivers Drava and Mura. Due to its favourable geographic position and strong economy, Međimurje County is today recognised as the place of high quality of living. The population mostly lives in rural communities divided into 22 districts. The largest town and capital, Čakovec, is one of only three towns in the County. High population density makes Međimurje the most densely populated county in Croatia.

Međimurje County borders with two EU member states - Slovenia and Hungary, thus functioning as the doorway to Croatia. Therefore, it is the ideal location to start spreading one’s business towards Southeast Europe.

The County is situated in the region of moderately warm, wet climate with distinctive seasons of relatively hot summers and cold winters, quick temperature rises in the spring and favourable weather conditions in the autumn. Geographically, it is divided in two parts: hilly region of Gornje Međimurje (”upper” Međimurje) and fertile lowland of Donje Međimurje (”lower” Međimurje).

History

Historically, Međimurje has been inhabited since the classical era, and the oldest written document that mentions the name of Međimurje is dated 1203. Međimurje had its share of the stormy and violent past of this part of the central Europe, and the period of its utmost prosperity was during the rule of the Croatian aristocratic family Zrinski in the 16th and 17th centuries. Due to this connection with the famous family, Međimurje is called the County of Zrinski.

The arrival of the industrial revolution in the 19th century marked the onset of industrial growth and laid foundations for the industries of textile, construction and food, which, along with metal-working industry, became the trademarks of the Međimurje County’s economy.

Modern infrastructure

The County’s geographical position has incited the growth of the highly developed transport infrastructure, roads and railways in particular.  Utility infrastructure (electricity, water, gas, telephone, Internet) is completely developed and available in almost every corner of the County. With its two rivers, the County has a great energy potential, which is partly utilised by the two existing hydroelectric power plants on river Drava.

People - dedicated and always friendly

What is always pointed out when talking about Međimurje is people: hard-working, with distinguished entrepreneurial spirit and high work culture.
