The economy of Međimurje County is based on strong processing industry, construction and agriculture. Lately, there has been a significant growth in tourism with great potential for further expansion.
In 2005 GDP of Međimurje County increased 6% to 5323 EUR per capita and now amounts to 75% of the national average GDP.
Međimurje is characterised by a large number of entrepreneurs and bustles with activity in that field. The figure of 1979 registered entrepreneurial subjects recorded on December 12th 2006 clearly reflects that fact. The structure of activities shows that, along with the unavoidable commerce, which is the main activity for a third of these enterprises, entrepreneurs are mostly focused on processing industry with 395 firms working in that field (20% of the total number) and construction with 266 firms (13.4%).
The entrepreneurs of Međimurje County reported 9.745 billion HRK of total income and 395 million HRK of after-tax profit, with the average of 23,969 people employed. The local economy is export-oriented. In 2006 export grew 24.4% in reference to the previous year, or 279 million HRK of exported goods, which is 87% of the value of import. This is a great result considering the fact that on the national level this percentage is 48.3%.
Trades and crafts are also among the carriers of the County’s economy are and a characteristic feature of this region. At the beginning of 2007 there were 1,938 registered craft enterprises, with 549 of them in manufacturing, 497 in construction, 374 in retail commerce, 223 in catering and 209 in transport.
